Rent Keeps Going Up
Hi Julielynn,
Good question for "Ask the RLTO", tenants need some information on this kind of subject! However, you need to provide some more information, are you on a lease or a month to month?, are you living in a owner occupied building?, in a building covered by the RLTO?

RENT KEEPS GOING UP
How do tenants know if they are covered by the RLTO, when they are ENTITLED to OCCUPY a dwelling unit to the exclusion of others in the City Of Chicago.

[This chapter applies to, regulates and determines rights, obligations and remedies under every rental agreement for a dwelling unit located within the City of Chicago regardless, of where the agreement is made, subject only to the limitations contained in Section 5-12-020. This chapter applies specifically to the United States and/or the State of Illinois, including specifically, programs operated or subsidized by the Chicago Housing Authority and/or the Illinois Housing Development Authority to the extent that this chapter is not in direct conflict with statutory or regulatory provisions governing such programs. (Prior code 193.1-1;Added Council Journal of Proceedings,September 8,1986,page 33771;Amend.Council Journal of Proceedings, November 6, 1991, page 7198;Amend. Council Journal of Proceedings, March 31, 2004, page 20938):] If there are no exclusions that would apply, as in your situation [the building is owned by one of those big management companies that are all over Chicago-its about 30 units.] Your lease should have informed you about the RLTO (5-12-170 Summary of Ordinance Attached to Rental Agreement.). As for the rent increases if agreed to at the signing of a renewable lease with an increase after 6 months, it would appear to be a legal and a acceptable practice.
